Architecture of Life, the inaugural exhibition in BAMPFA's landmark new building, explores the ways that architecture—as concept, metaphor, and practice—illuminates various aspects of life experience: the nature of the self and psyche, the fundamental structures of reality, and the power of the imagination to reshape our world. Occupying every gallery in the new building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the exhibition comprises over two hundred works of art in a wide range of media, as well as scientific illustrations and architectural drawings and models, made over the past two thousand years. Boundary-breaking, innovative, and radically interdisciplinary, the exhibition presents visually exquisite, rarely seen works in ways that suggest new connections and meanings.

International in scope, Architecture of Life includes work by artists David Chalmers Alesworth, Noriko Ambe, Yuri Ancarani, Kenneth Anger, Ruth Asawa, George Ault, Bruce Baillie, Karl Blossfeldt, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Giovanni Battista Bracelli, Gustave Caillebotte, Luca Cambiaso, James Castle, Marcel Duchamp, Léon Ferrari, Suzan Frecon, Laeh Glenn, Brent Green, Ganesh Haloi, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Johannes Itten, Will Jaeckel, Chris Johanson, Stephen Kaltenbach, Kimsooja, Paul Kos, Marlene Kos, Fernand Léger, Ed Loftus, Mark Manders, Gordon Matta-Clark, Julie Mehretu, Jay Nelson, Yuji Obata, George Ohr, Georgia O'Keeffe, Robert Overby, Bernard Palissy, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Avery Preesman, Qiu Zhijie, Ad Reinhardt, Ben Rivers, A. G. Rizzoli, John Robson, Till Roeskens, Dieter Roth, Gabriel Rud, Fred Sandback, Tomás Saraceno, Jesse Schlesinger, Felix Schramm, June Schwarcz, Harry Smith, Hyun-Sook Song, Hedda Sterne, Bob Stocksdale, Do Ho Suh, Al Taylor, Pavel Tchelitchew, Rosie Lee Tompkins , Carlo Urbino, Muhammad Hafiz Wan Rosli, James Whitney, John Whitney, and Will Yackulic; architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Gordon R. Ashby, Buckminster Fuller, Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata, Kumiko Inui, Toyo Ito, Frederick Kiesler, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Lebbeus Woods; scientists Wilson Bentley, Otto Lehmann, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Ernst Haeckel, Otto Lehmann, Nipam Patel, Viktor Schauberger, and Vance Williams; and composer Iannis Xenakis. The exhibition also presents a Turkish prayer rug, Dogon altar ladder, Khmer stupa, lace, Mbuti bark cloth drawings, Pomo baskets, Micronesian navigational charts, Tibetan meditation mandalas and a bronze seated Buddha, a Wow! signal document, a Yoruba divining tray, and tantric drawings from Rajasthan.
