EachModernispleasedtoannounce“UedaShoji:Retrospective”alarge-scaleretrospectiveexhibitionoftheJapanesephotographymasterUedaShoji,openingJanuary18,2020,atHuashanCulturalCreativeParkW-5.ThisisthefirstcommemorativeexhibitionofUedaShojiin20yearssincehisdeath,andisco-organizedwiththeShojiUedaOffice.TheexhibitioniscuratedbySatoMasako,curatorofrenownedphotographerRobertDoisneauandSaulLeiter,andfeatures140handprintedvintageworksfromtheUedaShoji’sfamilycollection,aswellasrare8mmfilmfootageandseminalphotobooks.EarlyBirddiscountticketsaleswillbeginonDecember11,2019.alimited-editionsouvenirticketfeaturingUedaShoji’spre-warmasterpiece"FourGirlsPosing"willbeavailableonDecember1aswell.“UedaShoji:Retrospective”willfeatureworksthatspantheearly1930stothephotographer’sfinal1999workBlackWave;givingvisitorsacomprehensivesurveyofUdeaShoji’seclectic70-yearpractice.Ofthe140vintagesworks,withtheexceptionofthecolorworks,allblackandwhitephotographswerehand-printedbythephotographerhimself.The11seriesondisplayrevealthephotographer’sloveandpursuanceofphotography.AsilluminatedintheexhibitionguidebycuratorSatoMasakoonecanclearlyseetheupsanddownsofPhotographyinJapanbeforeandafterWorldWarII:itcanbesaidthatthelifeofUedaShojireflectsthedevelopmentofJapanesephotography.OnJanuary8,2020,“Kako'sTaleofthePhotographyandLifeofUedaShoji”writtenbyUedaShoji’smostbelovedmodel,hisdaughterMasutaniKazuko,willbepublishedinTraditionalChinese.StartingJanuary15,2020,“AmateurForever,”anexhibitionofrarephotobooks,curatedbyraresecond-handphotobookshopnitesha,willbeexhibitedatniteshaBGTPbookgalleryinsideEachModern.OnJanuary18,2020,grandsontothephotographerandrepresentativeoftheShojiUedaOffice,MasutaniMasahirowillparticipateintheIdeasProgramstageofTaipeiDangdai,sharingwiththeaudienceUedaShoji’sartisticcareerandtheShojiUedaOfficemission.EachModernwillalsobepresentingnumerousrareworksbyUedaShojiatthegallery’sboothatTaipeiDangdai.In2020,letusimmerseourselvesintheeleganceof“Ueda-cho,”andrelivethemaster’ssurrealism,tenderness,ingenuity,fashion,andlife.
